History of Darbhanga

Up until 1875, when Sarkar Tirhut came under independent British rule, Darbhanga was a part of that district. The subdivisions had already been made: Samastipur (then known as Tajpur) in 1867, Madhubani in 1866, and Darbhanga Sadar in 1845. Up to 1908, when the Tirhut division was established with its headquarters at Muzaffarpur, it was a part of the Patna division.
